The consulting session

Research before the call, a clock during it, and a written breakdown with a proposal after it.

Updated 2026-10-25

Before the call I’ve read everything you’ve posted. I find your median and your outlier, and that’s the first thing we look at. The session runs to a clock and opens on why now. With positioning you want to avoid that messy middle, so you’re either the builder or the authority. I record it, and within 48 hours you get the breakdown: the roadmap, the transcript and what we each do this week. Then, if it’s right, we move in two-week sprints.

How do I use it?

  1. Research their profiles before the call: median, outliers at 3 times the median or more, and every claim they make.
  2. Write the prep doc with three lines to land and Tom’s lean on the next step.
  3. Build the run of show as timed blocks, each with its question and a done when line.
  4. Build the on-screen session page and share it during the call.
  5. Open with why now and what success looks like in 12 months, and let them answer first.
  6. Settle the side: the builder or the authority, out of the messy middle.
  7. Record the call and send the breakdown within 48 hours: roadmap, transcription and action points for both sides.
  8. Make a team edition without pricing when they want to share it with their team.
  9. Close on the next step: stop here, a three-month sprint of fortnightly sessions, or an interim head of content role.

In his words

And maybe, so when I look at personal brand, you want to avoid that messy middle, right?
