Recording day
Write the bank, set the room, record in one batch, then turn the tape into clips and tickets.
Updated 2026-10-25
Recording day is the cheapest way I know to post every day. I book a studio, someone reads out questions I’ve written, and I answer them. The podcast is there for the clips. The first fake pod gave me 34 usable clips in an hour, and the hotline got through 60 callers in one sitting. I still refuse to buy cameras. The writing is the work. Anything we never reach goes to the top of the next bank, and every answer becomes a ticket for the editors.
How do I use it?
- Put every question skipped or never reached last time at the top of the new bank.
- Write new questions from the calls, packets and concept pages that have arrived since the last recording.
- Name the specifics in each question: the brand, the person, the number.
- Write a spine for each question: lead with, reach for, land on, every number checked against Numbers.
- Build the call sheet: call times, the spaces, cameras, sound, light and the clips you plan to cut.
- Book the studio and a person to ask, and run both mics for the whole session.
- Film extra short-form questions in the same session while everyone is fresh.
- Map the tape against the bank: answered with its timestamp, skipped, abandoned or never reached.
- Write one ticket per answer for the editors, with what Tom landed on.
- Carry the never-reached questions into the next bank as its running order.
In his words
The reason it’s not real is because we’re focusing on clips and we’re trying to get daily clips every single day.
