Outlier

A post past three times the median views of the last 30. The outlier is the brief for what to make next.

Why does it matter?

The outlier is the brief for what to make next. It shows what the audience already wants, measured against your own baseline.

How does it work?

  1. Work out the median views of the last 30 posts.
  2. Mark anything past three times the median as an outlier.
  3. Track outliers in two or three adjacent niches too.
  4. Rebuild the outlier around one of your eight things, then post it.

Where has Tom used it?

Tom's outlier method is built from the published talks and podcasts of Paddy Galloway, Seb Losardo, Kallaway, Jenny Hoyos and Caleb Ralston, written as steps. In the first three months with a client, a few outlier videos that really perform are one of the signals Tom watches for.

  • Creator audit: Scrape the last 30 posts, find the median, the ratio and the outliers, bucket the formats, then say what to make next.
  • Formats over ideas: A repeatable format beats a one-off story, because the audience can guess what comes next. Repeat it until it becomes a show.
  • The eight things: Six to eight messages a person says over and over, a hundred different ways, until people know what they stand for.
