Views per follow

Views divided by follows for each post, the metric Tom uses most. A follow is the biggest signal short of a sale.

Why does it matter?

A follow is the biggest signal online short of someone buying. Views per follow shows which posts turn viewers into an audience. Lower is better.

How does it work?

  1. Track views divided by follows for every post.
  2. Compare it by format and by hook.
  3. Watch the average and the median, and ignore the single spike.

Where has Tom used it?

At Sam Stoffel, the team logged views and new followers on every video and cut views per new follower from 24 to 14 by iterating on format and hook. One video did 700,000 views and brought in 40,000 followers.

  • Overwhelm the algorithm: Volume first, refine second. Every post is a shot on goal, and 80% of the way five times a day out-learns 100% three times a week.
  • Trial reels: Instagram's test posts, run two a day on top of three feed posts to test hooks, with the winners moved to the feed.
