The starting point

Campus Society was a social network for university students, founded by Rashid Ajami and launched in July 2016. Tom joined in November 2016 as employee number five. When he left in September 2018 the company had about 85 staff.

What Tom did

As Social & Content Lead he grew the platform from under 10,000 to 600,000 monthly active users. He launched Tyro Magazine with three editorial staff and 350 student writers. The commissioning system was the product.

Partners

In June 2017 Campus Society signed a UCAS Media partnership that placed two Campus Society staff inside UCAS headquarters. There were also partnerships with Barclays and ISIC.

The results

  • Tyro Magazine reached 40 percent of UK students every month.
  • 350 student writers and three editorial staff.
  • Campus Society grew from under 10,000 to 600,000 monthly active users.
  • Its journalism was recognised by the UN Refugee Agency.
