YouTube consultant vs YouTube course

A YouTube course teaches a general method that you apply to your own channel. A YouTube consultant applies a method to your channel for you, with a diagnosis of what is broken. Take a course when you have time and a small budget. Hire a consultant when you want answers about your own channel, or when the channel has to sell a business.

What do courses look like?

Think Media calls its course "The #1 YouTube Strategy Course" and lists "18K Students, 108M Subscribers, 28B Views", as listed on their site, October 2026. See go.thinkmedia.com.

Video Creators, Tim Schmoyer's company, sells three levels: a Done By You course, a Done With You 8 week cohort and a Done For You plan, as listed on their site, October 2026. See videocreators.com.

When should you pick which?

  • Pick a course when you are new, the budget is small and you are happy to learn by doing.
  • Pick a consultant when you have tried the general advice and the numbers have still stalled.
  • Pick a consultant when the channel sells a business, because a wrong turn costs more than the fee.
  • If you are a founder, ask whether YouTube is the right first platform at all.

Where does Tom fit?

Tom offers both. The free version is the method in writing. The paid versions apply it to you.

Founders usually want to start with YouTube. Tom's advice is to start with short form on Instagram and TikTok, give LinkedIn the winners and bring YouTube in last: short form first, LinkedIn on winners, YouTube last.

  • The Content Operators Playbook, free. 7 playbooks, 49 principles, one page per principle.
  • The Content Operators cohort, January 2027. For creators and founders who want to run the content system themselves, with Tom. Dates and price go to the waitlist first.
  • Power hour session, £600. 60 minute video call. The fundamentals, applied to you. What to make, for whom and in which format.
  • The three month sprint, by application (2 spots left). 6 fortnightly 60 minute calls. A seat in your team. The 3 month plan. Fortnightly accountability.

Questions

Is a YouTube course worth it?

For a new channel with time to learn, often yes. A course gives you a method. It cannot see your channel, so it cannot tell you which of your own videos to make next.

Should a founder start on YouTube?

Usually later. YouTube is really hard when nobody knows your story, and one video a week makes learning slow. Tom starts founders on short form on Instagram and TikTok, gives LinkedIn the formats that already won, and brings YouTube in once the message works.

What does a YouTube consultant cost?

Prices vary and most consultants do not publish them. Tom's Power hour session is £600 for 60 minutes on video. Grow lists strategy subscriptions from £8,000 per channel per month, as listed on their site, October 2026.

Can I learn Tom's method for free?

Yes. The Content Operators Playbook is free: 7 playbooks, 49 principles, covering positioning, content, the funnel, distribution, how Tom works, the formats and the anatomy of a clip.
