Founder-led content vs a content agency

Founder-led content puts the founder on camera, saying what they believe, on their own channels, with a team that runs the formats. A content agency makes and posts content for the business at a set volume. Pick founder-led content when people buy from the person. Pick an agency when the plan is set and the bottleneck is output.

When should you pick founder-led content?

  • Your customers want to hear from the person who built the business.
  • You sell a product, a course, a community or a service that the founder's expertise backs up.
  • You can say the same seven or eight messages, every day, on camera.

When should you pick an agency?

  • The founder will not be on camera.
  • The formats already work and the bottleneck is volume.
  • Someone in the business owns the strategy and can brief the agency every week.

Where does Tom fit?

Tom builds founder-led content. The method is in the founder's personal brand: start from the last 30 posts, agree one line on who the founder is, who they are for and who they are against, then give every format one job across the top, middle and bottom of the funnel.

Sam Stoffel, a founder who sold his first business in 2024, had about 1,500 followers after seven months of posting. Tom rebuilt the team, gave the brand a mission and an enemy, and built a system that posted three times a day. It went from 0 to 500,000 followers in 10 months.

At Heath Media, Ben Heath wanted to spend little of his own time on day to day operations. Tom moved the three people he inherited into new roles before making one new hire, the team grew to 14, and the Skool community he launched became the number one trending money community on Skool.

Where agencies go wrong with founders is its own lesson: Agencies over-index on the founder's journey.

  • Power hour session, £600. 60 minute video call. The fundamentals, applied to you. What to make, for whom and in which format.
  • The three month sprint, by application (2 spots left). 6 fortnightly 60 minute calls. A seat in your team. The 3 month plan. Fortnightly accountability.
  • Fractional Head of Content, £3,000 to £7,500 a month, 6 month minimum, then monthly (1 spot left). Fractional head of content, or fractional COO, for creator and founder-led businesses. I run your content function end to end. Strategy, cadence, team, hiring, tooling and reporting. A senior seat in the business for the cost of a fraction of a full time hire. Worldwide and remote.

Questions

How much of the founder's time does founder-led content take?

Daily selfie videos from day one, low production, saying the same seven or eight messages. The team runs everything else. At Heath Media, Ben Heath wanted to spend little of his own time on day to day operations, so Tom ran them.

Which platform should a founder start on?

Short form on Instagram and TikTok. Tom gives LinkedIn the formats that already won and brings YouTube in last, because YouTube is slow to learn on when nobody knows your story.

What does Tom charge?

Tom's Power hour session is £600 for 60 minutes. The three month sprint is by application. The Fractional Head of Content role is £3,000 to £7,500 a month, with a 6 month minimum, then monthly.
