Viktor Frankl's framework, from Man's Search for Meaning, pp. 112 to 125. Framework 4 of 4 from [Man's Search for Meaning](https://tomsharman.com/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/index.md) by Viktor Frankl. Category: Life and thinking. ## The steps 1. **Pain.** Turn suffering into a human achievement and accomplishment. 2. **Guilt.** Take the opportunity to change oneself for the better. 3. **Death and transitoriness.** Use the passing of time as an incentive to take responsible action. ## Where it comes from From chapter: Postscript 1984, pp. 112–125 Frankl defines tragic optimism as staying optimistic despite pain, guilt and death. He argues that happiness must ensue from a reason to be happy, and that the feeling of meaninglessness underlies depression, aggression and addiction, citing figures from Yalom, Vienna and addiction studies. Meaning is available through creating, experiencing and above all the attitude taken to suffering, shown by Jerry Long. He ends by stressing that human dignity does not depend on usefulness, and by warning against nihilism. ## The animation 24 seconds, 4:5, no sound. - MP4: https://tomsharman-downloads-006143767029.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/downloads/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/tragic-optimism.mp4 - MP4, dark: https://tomsharman-downloads-006143767029.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/downloads/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/tragic-optimism-dark.mp4 - Still: https://tomsharman-downloads-006143767029.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/downloads/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/tragic-optimism.png - Still, dark: https://tomsharman-downloads-006143767029.s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com/downloads/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/tragic-optimism-dark.png
