# Man's Search for Meaning

> Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning in 4 frameworks with steps, and the two Tom Sharman lessons it backs.

The frameworks here are Viktor Frankl's, from Man's Search for Meaning. Claude read the book in Tom's Brain and linked it to his lessons.

## How Tom uses this

- [A brand that compounds has a mission and an enemy](https://tomsharman.com/lessons/a-brand-that-compounds-has-a-mission-and-an-enemy/index.md): Frankl says lasting success comes as a by-product of dedication to a cause greater than oneself, which is the mission-first logic behind a brand that compounds. (pp. 9 and 93)
- [The intake question is why, and what it is costing them](https://tomsharman.com/lessons/the-intake-question-is-why-and-what-it-is-costing-them/index.md): Frankl's maxim that a why lets a person bear any how backs asking a founder why they are investing before anything else. (pp. 68 and 88)

## What it argues

Frankl argues that the primary human drive is a will to meaning, and that it holds under any conditions, even the worst. The book shows this through his years in the camps, where prisoners with a future task, a person or an unfinished work to live for survived best, and where everyone kept the last freedom to choose their attitude. He then sets out logotherapy: meaning is specific to one person in one moment, found in work, love or the stance taken to unavoidable suffering. Success and happiness cannot be pursued, they ensue as a by-product of dedication to something beyond yourself. Freedom is only half the story and must be matched by responsibility.

## Worth keeping

- He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how, so find the reason first (p. 68, p. 88).
- Everything can be taken from a person except the choice of attitude (p. 59).
- Stop asking what you expect from life and recognise that life is asking you (p. 68).
- Success and happiness cannot be pursued, they must ensue as a side effect of dedication to a cause greater than yourself (p. 9, p. 113).
- Mental health needs tension toward a worthwhile, freely chosen goal, not a tensionless state (p. 89).
- The meaning of life is specific to a person and a moment, like the best chess move depending on the position (p. 91).
- Meaning comes by deed, by experience or love, and by the attitude taken to unavoidable suffering (p. 93).
- Unemployment neurosis equated jobless with useless and useless with meaningless, and unpaid meaningful activity lifted it (p. 115).
- Paradoxical intention breaks the fear and symptom loop by wishing for what you fear (p. 102).
- Frankl's one-sentence meaning of his life, guessed by a student, was to help others find the meaning of theirs (p. 134).

## The questions it answers

### How do you build a personal brand that generates inbound rather than requiring outbound?

Frankl says success and happiness cannot be pursued and ensue as the side effect of dedication to a cause or person, so inbound follows from serving something beyond the brand.

## The frameworks

1. [Three phases of the prisoner's mind](https://tomsharman.com/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/three-phases-of-the-prisoners-mind/index.md): How a person's reactions to extreme captivity move over time, so you can see where someone is and what they need.
2. [Three ways to find meaning](https://tomsharman.com/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/three-ways-to-find-meaning/index.md): Where meaning can be found in any situation, including one you cannot change.
3. [Paradoxical intention](https://tomsharman.com/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/paradoxical-intention/index.md): A short-term technique for phobias and compulsions that cuts the loop between fear and symptom.
4. [Tragic optimism](https://tomsharman.com/bookshelf/mans-search-for-meaning/tragic-optimism/index.md): How to stay optimistic in the face of pain, guilt and death by turning each into a chance.
