# Four practices for a climate where the truth is heard

> How leaders make sure the brutal facts reach them and get acted on.

Jim Collins's framework, from Good to Great, pp. 74 to 99.

Framework 5 of 15 from [Good to Great](https://tomsharman.com/bookshelf/good-to-great/index.md) by Jim Collins. Category: Lead generation.

## The steps

1. **Lead with questions, not answers.** Use questions to gain understanding, not to manipulate or blame.
2. **Engage in dialogue and debate, not coercion.** Run the process like a heated scientific debate for the best answer.
3. **Conduct autopsies, without blame.** Extract the learning from mistakes, with the leader taking responsibility first.
4. **Build red flag mechanisms.** Turn information into information that cannot be ignored, such as short pay or a red flag card.

## Where it comes from

From chapter: Chapter 4 - Confront The Brutal Facts (Yet Never Lose Faith), pp. 74–99
