# The four Mirror Effects

> Greene's typology of the ways mirroring works as a tool of power.

Robert Greene's framework, from 48 Laws of Power, pp. 564 to 587.

Framework 26 of 27 from [48 Laws of Power](https://tomsharman.com/bookshelf/48-laws-of-power/index.md) by Robert Greene. Category: Sales and negotiation.

## The steps

1. **The Neutralizing Effect.** Mimic your enemy's actions so he cannot see your strategy, or shadow him to learn his habits.
2. **The Narcissus Effect.** Reflect a person's inmost desires, values and tastes back to them to entrance and disarm them.
3. **The Moral Effect.** Mirror what others have done to you so they realise how their behaviour feels.
4. **The Hallucinatory Effect.** Create a perfect copy of a place or person so people take it for the real thing.

## Where it comes from

From chapter: LAW 44, pp. 564–587

When you mirror your enemies, doing exactly as they do, they cannot figure out your strategy, and when you mirror their psyche, they feel seduced. Greene sets out four mirror effects: neutralizing (the Warrior's Mirror and the Shadow), narcissus (the Seducer's and Courtier's Mirror), moral (the Teacher's Mirror) and hallucinatory (the Deceiver's Mirror). His cases include Fouche shielding himself from Napoleon by mirroring and spying on the spies, Alcibiades reflecting Socrates, the Spartans and the Persians in turn, Marie Mancini holding up Louis XIV's romantic ideals, Ivan the Terrible enthroning the weak Simeon to mirror the boyars, Erickson's analogies, and Yellow Kid Weil's fake bank in Muncie. The warning is the mirrored situation: Wagner was cast as a second Lola Montez.
